Looking to embark on your sustainability journey? Good news—renewable energy isn’t just an option; it’s a smart choice supported by a range of initiatives and schemes designed to empower both businesses and homes!
To ensure Malaysians contribute towards Malaysia’s renewable energy mix goal of 70% by 2050, the government has a variety of schemes and initiatives to adopt renewable energy.
Here’s how your business or home can benefit:
1. Net Energy Metering (NEM)
NEM means that the energy produced from the solar photovoltaic (PV) system will be consumed first, and any excess will be exported to TNB at the prevailing displaced cost.
NEM is divided into three categories:
- NEM NOVA for commercial and industrial building owners
- NEM GoMen for government buildings
- NEM Rakyat for residential homes
Recently, the government announced that effective 1 Jan 2025 until 30 June 2025, an additional 300MW was allocated for businesses. It is equivalent to 300-600* solar PV systems for factories!
Malaysian homes were provided with an additional allocation of 150MW solar quota which is equivalent to 13,000* solar PV systems for homes! Additionally, the Solar for Rakyat Incentive Scheme, SolaRIS, a one-time rebate of up to a maximum of RM4,000** when one adopts solar for home, was extended until 30 April 2025.
Moreover, NEM has been opened to the agriculture industry and rooftop solar assets under previous mechanisms can now upgrade their system capacity to NEM.
2. Self-Consumption (SELCO)
This scheme applies when electricity is being generated for our own usage and any excess is not allowed to be exported to the grid. The Government is encouraging individual, commercial and industrial consumers to install solar PV for their own consumption, looking to hedge against the rising cost of electricity.
SELCO was only reserved for rooftop solar but was announced by the Government that the scheme to include installations for ground-mounted solar or floating solar (on water) and the agricultural industry.
3. Green Tax Relief
Businesses who invest in solar PV systems can enjoy GITA by claiming 60% of qualifying capital expenditure incurred during the period of 1 January 2024 to 31 December 2026 in the following qualifying activities:
- Renewable energy project
- Energy efficiency
- Qualifying assets approved by the Minister
